Where to go

Java

Watch the sunrise over Borobudur, hike to the blue flames of Ijen and the smoking crater of Mount Bromo, and discover Yogyakarta's royal arts and living traditions.

Java is the cultural and historical heart of Indonesia — the most densely populated island in the world, and home to some of its grandest monuments. A trip here weaves together ancient temples, vibrant cities and a string of dramatic volcanoes.

Most journeys start in Yogyakarta, the artistic soul of Java, where you visit Borobudur — the largest Buddhist temple in the world — and the Hindu temple complex of Prambanan. Days are spent in batik workshops, the sultan's kraton, silver villages and lively street-food alleys.

Heading east, you climb to the rim of Mount Bromo for one of the most iconic sunrises in Asia, then hike before dawn to the surreal blue flames inside the Ijen crater. From there, ferries cross to Bali or planes connect to Bromo's east-Java neighbours.
